Songkran wishes and asking elders for blessings

Songkran is the Thai New Year, held in mid-April. Beyond the water fights, many families pour scented water over the hands of elders to ask for their blessing, and people send wishes to friends they will not see. This page helps you find the right words for each.

During the rot nam dam hua ritual, younger people ask forgiveness for anything they may have done wrong in the past year and ask the elder for a blessing; the elder then blesses them. By custom the younger person does not give the blessing, so keep your words to an apology and a request, for example: "On this Songkran, please forgive anything I may have done wrong, and may I ask for your blessing."

For friends and colleagues, Songkran wishes can be light and fresh: "Happy Songkran! May the new Thai year keep you cool, happy and well-funded." For clients, stay polite, thank them, and wish them a safe trip over the long holiday.
